Blue-green Fiber Laser for Biomedical Applications

Agency: NIH
Period of Performance: 2005 - 2007
Completed at: Intelligent Optical Systems (USA)

A prototype, single-mode, Ytterbium-doped, fiber-based, double-line (blue and green) laser has been developed. Such a source has a number of advantages over solid crystal- and gas-based devices and is considered ideal for developing miniature inexpensive lasers for biomedical and telecom applications. The proposed architecture allows the generation of not only two, but multiple, lines on demand in the blue-green region of the optical spectrum. A working prototype of the blue-green multi-wavelength laser system was designed, fabricated, and tested.
